How to save users checkbox choice to server with Javascript?

I was wondering how I could save a user's checkbox choice to the server. The user would log in and then pick one of the checkboxes which would be saved at the server. I only know basic javascript so I am very new to this. Maybe I could send the data via TDP connection or something. How do other websites save your choice? I am quite lost so any help will be greatly appreciated!
