AngularJS: Material Design Data Table Checkbox

I am very new to Angular. I have the following line of code on my index.html:

<md-icon md-svg-icon="toggle:" aria-label="toggle unread"></md-icon>

I get the part that whenever object.read evaluates to true, the checkbox will use the check_box_outline_blank as its icon and check_box otherwise. But when I click it, nothing happens. Can anyone help me figure out how to uncheck or check the box (change its icon) when you click it? Thanks!
