How to identify large checkmarks that overlap the checkbox using openCV / deep learning?

I am trying to detect checkboxes using OpenCV. I am able to detect the cases where the boxes are empty (not tick-marked) as well as the checkboxes having checkmarks neatly inscribed inside them.

But whenever there is an image of the type aside enter image description here

where the checkmark cross signs are huge and overlap the boxes, I am not able to detect the checkboxes and checkmarks.

Can someone kindly suggest a work around for this using OpenCV or any deep learning model ?
