Check a html checkbox inside a span

I have the following code

<span class={Field Name=under_18}>&#160;</span>

where {Field Name=under_18} should either return a checkbox

    <span class=checkbox>&#160;</span>

which works just fine

The thing that isn't working is getting a checked checkbox, such as

<span class=checkbox_checked>&#160;</span>
