Ajax checkbox filter system

I just started using PHP and Ajax. I am having a difficulty getting started with an filter system. The filter system is consisting of checkboxes. I want the filters to be from the database table. After clicking on a checkbox I want to show only the entries which have that filter element. Is this possible? And what is the best way to do this?
