Using text in place of a checkbox

Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I’ve been asked by a client to style checkboxes on a site I am building for them so that rather than a checkbox, it has the word “Select” instead.

Once it is selected it needs to have a tick over the front of it.

In my opinion I don’t think this is as functional especially on mobile, but alas, my concerns have been ignored.

I don’t know where to start with this one.
