HTML checkbox with check ("✓") or ex ("X") or blank [duplicate]

I'm looking for a way to create a checkbox with these three states that can be cycled by clicking:

• check ("✓") - true
• ex ("X") - false
• blank - undefined or null

I'd prefer not to use any external libraries (except jQuery which is already available).

It will be used for a filter form to make queries such as "must have these tags" and "must not have these tags".
