Input type checkbox values

I am looking at this checkbox demo: https://www.w3schools.com/howto/tryit.asp?filename=tryhow_css_custom_checkbox and I notice that input doesnt get checked value when checked. Is this valid html?

I tried using this with php forms and the value if "on" when checked.
