Laravel 5 Filtering data from checkbox

I'm working on this laravel 5.1 project. (site: ww2web.org) I have a database and it holds some categories (eg: pictures or movies). I want the visitors to choose via checkboxes what data they want to see. My question, how can I do this in the most functional way. Via the controller, via routing or just in the HTML part of the page? Can anyone point me in the right direction?
