Why can't I add a newly created checkbox to a checkbox list in Java? [duplicate]

I'm getting a null point exception at this line:

primaryList.add(primaryBox);

Here is the relevant code:

private List<JCheckBox> primaryList;
private newTablePane = new JPanel();
private int count = 0;

public void addRow(){
JPanel row = new JPanel();
row.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
JCheckBox primaryBox = new JCheckBox("Primary Key");
primaryList.add(primaryBox);
row.add(primaryList.get(count));
newTablePane.add(row);
count++;
}

What's the reason behind the null point exception? The object is clearly instantiated and is not null or anything.
